Review Parts of Paragraph

1. A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought.

2. A paragraph is a group of sentences about one specific topic.

3. The topic sentence tells about the main idea of the paragraph.

4. The concluding sentence is at the end of the paragraph.

5. The first sentence at the beginning of a paragraph is moved in. To indent is to make this space.

6. The supporting sentences are called the body of a paragraph.  

7. A title gives the reader information about what is in a book, magazine, song, movie, or paragraph.

Grammar Terms

1. Adjective - describes a noun

  He is a very smart student.

2. Adverb - describes a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.

He types quickly

She types very quickly.

3. Article - definite article 'the' / indefinite articles 'a' and 'an'

The teacher gave an assignment to the students.

She is eating a banana.

4. Clause - a group of words that has a subject-verb combination (Sentences can have one or more clauses.)




5. Noun - a person, place, thing, or idea.

  Sandra likes to eat sandwiches for lunch.

  Love is a very strong emotion.

6. Object - a word that comes after a transitive verb or a preposition

He bought a new mobile phone.

I left my book in the classroom.

7. Predicate - the part of a sentence that shows what a subject does


8. Preposition -   a word that can show location, time, and direction such as around, at, behind, between, from, on, in, near, to, over, under, and with

9. Punctuation - includes the period (.), comma (,), question mark (?), and exclamation point (!)

10. Subject - tells who or what the sentence is about

Our teacher gave us an online assignment. It was difficult.

11. Tense - shows when the action happened.

Simple Present:   He cycles to school every day.


Simple Past:   He walked to school yesterday.



12. Verb - a word that shows the action of a sentence

They speak Chinese.

My mother teaches at university.



Grammar Review

Pattern 1 - Subject + be + adjective = We are happy.

Pattern 2 - Subject + be + noun = They are students.

Pattern 3 - Subject + be + place phrase = She is at school.


Pattern 4 - There + be + subject + (extra information)

= There are students in the classroom.

Adjectives can go before nouns. When more than one adjective is used before a noun, there is a certain order for the adjectives.
