REVIEW VOCABULARY AND GRAMMAR FOR EXAMINATIONS B1 Pre- Intermediate

REVIEW VOCABULARY AND GRAMMAR FOR EXAMINATIONS (Units7-9 Personal Best B1 Pre- Intermediate)

Present perfect with yet and already

We often use the present perfect with yet and already.

Question: Have you been to the new library building yet?

Affirmative answer: Yes, I’ve already been there.

Negative answer: No, I haven’t been there yet.

We use yet in negative sentences and questions to talk about something that we

expected to happen before now. Yet comes at the end of the sentence or question.

Have you written the report yet? (Yes/no question)

I haven’t finished it yet. (Negative statement)

We use already to talk about something that happened before now or earlier than

we expected. Already comes before the main verb.

Do you want to go out for dinner?

No, thanks. I’ve already eaten.

We sometimes use already in questions instead of yet. Already comes between the

auxiliary verb and the main verb or at the end of the question. Already is usually

stressed to show surprise.

Have you already finished your science project?

Present perfect with for and since

We use the present perfect with for and since to talk about a situation that started

in the past and is still true now.

We use since to refer to a fixed point in time in the past when the situation started.

I’ve studied in this university since 2018.

I haven’t spoken to my best friend since last month.

Have you known each other since you were a child?

We use for to refer to the period of time the situation has been true.

You have been a student for three months.

This phone hasn’t worked for weeks!

Has the restaurant been here for a long time?

We use How long …? to ask about the length of time a situation has been true.

How long have you known your boyfriend?

We’ve known each other since last March.

How long has he been a doctor?

He’s been a doctor for about two years.

Present perfect or simple past

We use the simple past to talk about completed actions in the past.

When did you start studying here?

I started studying here 3 months ago.

We use the simple past to talk about a time period that started and finished in the past.

How long did you study in high school?

I studied for six years.

too, too many, too much, and (not) enough

We use too, too many, and too much to mean "more than necessary" or "more than is good."

This online workbook is too difficult. There are too many questions!

We use too before adjectives and adverbs. = too + adjective/adverb

The canteen is too crowded.

She drives too fast.

We use too many before countable nouns. = too many + plural noun

I drink too many cups of coffee.

We use too much before uncountable nouns. = too much + uncountable noun

I drink too much coffee.

We can also use too much after a verb without an object.

You worry too much. You should learn to relax.

We use enough to mean "the right amount" or "sufficient." We can also use

not enough to mean "less than necessary" or "less than is good."

Is the cake sweet enough? I didn’t have enough sugar to make.

Enough comes before countable and uncountable nouns. = enough + noun

She doesn’t eat enough vegetables.

Have we got enough time?

Enough comes after an adjective or adverb. = adjective/ adverb + enough

The information isn’t clear enough.

She didn’t sing well enough to win the competition.

We can also use enough after a verb without an object.

I didn’t study enough last night.

have to, not have to, and can't

We use have to to talk about obligations and rules.

You always have to turn off the lights when you leave your room.

Students to have to wear uniforms to school.

When we ask questions about obligations and rules, we usually use have to.

Do you have to go to school early?

Why do we have to wear a helmet?

We use don’t have to to say that something isn’t necessary.

You don’t have to do your homework in the library.

Students don't have to stay in the campus all the time.

We use can't to talk about things that are not allowed. We call this prohibition.

I can't use my phone during the test.

You can't smoke here.

used to

We use used to + the base form to talk about habits or situations that were true in the

past, but aren’t true now.

I used to live with my parents every day in high school. = I don’t live with them now.

I used to play with my friends. = I don’t play with them now.

We form the negative with didn’t + use to + the base form.

She didn’t use to drink so much tea. (= She drinks a lot now).

I didn’t use to like spicy food. (= I like it a lot now).

We form questions with did + use to + the base form.

Did she use to play on the school volleyball team?

Why did you use to have three mobile phones?

We can use the simple past instead of used to. The meaning is the same.

We used to have English classes at school. = We had English classes at school.

He used to be shy when he was younger = He was shy when he was younger.

We don’t use used to to talk about actions that only happened once.

I bought this shirt last year. NOT I used to buy this shirt last year.

They started work at 9:00 this morning. NOT They used to start work at 9:00 this

morning.

The passive

Sentences can be either active or passive.

Active: My friend wrote this letter. = subject + verb + object

Passive: This letter was written by my friend. = Subject + be + past participle (v3)

We use the active sentence to focus on the person who does the action.

My brother wrote this book.

We use the passive sentence to focus on the action itself or on the thing the action

affects.

This book was written by my brother.

We also use the passive when we don’t know who does/did the action or it isn’t

important.

This papaya salad is made in Thailand.

My mobile phone was stolen last night.

We form the simple present passive with am/is/are + past participle of the main verb.

We form the simple past passive with was/were + past participle of the main verb.

Simple present passive: Rice is grown in Thailand.

Simple past passive: The library was built four years ago.

To say who does/did the action, we use by.

Lots of souvenirs are bought by tourists.

The building was designed by a Thai architect.

To form questions, we put the verb be before the subject.

Is your necklace made of gold?

When was the phone stolen?

Who was the music sung by?

CEPT Practice- Cambridge English Placement Test Demo

CEPT Practice- Cambridge English Placement Test Demo

The Secret of answering CEPT                                     CEPT Demo 1

Question: What is the secret of answering the Reading and Listening exercises on CEPT correctly?

Answer:

The correct answer to any question must be based on something that was written in the text or heard in the audio recording. This means that it does not allow you to interpret the meaning based on the following:

·         any personal knowledge you may have of the subject

·         your personal beliefs

·         your own opinions about the subject

·         something that may sound logical but is not actually mentioned or implied

The answer must be objective, meaning that it must be based only on what you read or what you heard.

This only allows for two possible answer types:

1. repeating information directly from the text or audio, or

2. restating the idea through paraphrased information (restating the information or idea using different words).

This is the secret! Almost every single correct answer in the Reading and Listening sections of the CEPT are synonyms and paraphrased ideas and information.

Knowing this, it makes it easier to identify the best answer as well as eliminate the distractors, or wrong answers. In a general sense distractors are wrong because they do not restate the idea or information from the part of a passage or audio that contains the answer to the question. The distractors are constructed by the test makers with this fact in mind.

The four things you must learn to do are the following:

1.     1.  Analyze the questions, the text, and the answer choices.

2.      2. Look for paraphrases of key words from the questions of the text.

3.      3. Look for paraphrases from the text in the answer choices.

4.     4.  Eliminate the wrong answer choices to help you find the best answer.

You hear a school headmaster talking about notices. What is he telling the students?

A how to produce them

B when to remove them

C where to display them

Audio script

Short listening text answer

M: Let me be clear about this. As you know, all students are allowed to put up notices in the school with all sorts of information which may be of interests to other students. And I must say some of you take great care to produce really artistic notices. Now, the school rule on notices is clear. They may be displayed only on notice boards provided by the school. And any notices placed anywhere else will be immediately removed.

Short listening picture answer

W: So heres your room key and Ive got your passport details. Now what about parking?

M: My car is just outside the hotel at the moment, so Ill have to move it. Would it be alright to leave it in the market square overnight?

W: You could do that, but I wouldnt recommend it. We have our own garage under the hotel. Its just 5 euros a night. Well park it there for you if you like.

M: Oh great. Here are the keys. Ive already taken all my luggage out.

Long listening

The product Im going to review this week is a digital camera, the Roxel DX15. Its hard to criticize a camera you can buy for 110 dollars a real bargain for anyone. You simply cant expect greatness in all features at that price. A low-price model will probably be fantastic in some areas and it does look stylish but other things will have to be lacking. This is certainly true with the DX15. The body of the Roxel DX15 measures 91 millimeters wide by 56 millimeters high. Its 28 millimeters deep and weighs 128 grams so it fits easily in a pocket or a small bag. Its silver body is a combination of metal and plastic. Its strong enough not to get damaged from being banged around in a bag. So its great for keeping with you in case of unexpected photo opportunities. The only problem is the design of the little door on the bottom of the camera which covers the rechargeable battery and memory card. It slides open a little too easily even sometimes while you are taking photos with the camera. Its also very easy to put the battery in incorrectly because its not clear which way around it should go. All the camera control buttons and dials are on the back of the camera. The dials are small but turned easily and they don’t move when you’re pulling the camera out of your pocket. However, all the buttons are really tiny and sometimes need to be pressed more than once because of this. Let me talk about the camera functions. Finding your way around the menu system is extremely simple. It has no standard functions and the added advantage of face detection that’s where the camera finds faces in a picture and adjusts itself to the best settings for the faces and this function works quickly and accurately. But we think users will miss having guidelines for photograph composition not available on this model. Picture quality is about what we expected for this camera it’s definitely better than the cameras you get on phones but it certainly not great. In all conditions the photos it takes lacks sharpness and detail. Colors and white balance are satisfactory though it has some problems in the blues. In conclusion, the Roxel DX15 is relatively cheap and easy to use. Making it a reasonable choice for those who want something of average quality that doesn’t cost too much. However, if you can afford a little more, the Roxel D120 is a much better choice with improved picture quality and performance. Those who don’t mind a bigger camera could also take a look at the Proto P10 which costs about the same as the DX15.

Making a career in music

Are you desperate to have a music career? First off, remember this - no one really knows who's going to get to the top. All those talent scouts, those so-called star-makers, are just guessing. So go into your music career knowing that there's no mystery ingredient. What you need is confidence, an appreciation of a good tune, luck and lots of charm.

In a market where there's room for songs of every kind, you have a chance of selling your music. The trick is to present yourself as the only person with a particular style or talent. And why not be a bit boastful about it? Don't be shy about networking with all sorts of people - it's surprising who can help you. Start by playing your music to the owners of local music clubs.

Prepare for poverty - you probably won't be partying with the stars for a while. Get a job, or even several jobs. Best of all, seek out music-related work. You can play at wedding parties, give music instruction, or write songs to advertise businesses on local radio. This way, you get that added bit of musical experience to boast about at your first audition or interview.

Be professional. Take a look at your website. If it looks horrible, then it's time to rethink the design. Make it attractive, but accessible. It must be straightforward for people to find their way around the site or they'll lose interest. A record deal is no longer necessarily the first goal these days - you can build an audience online first, and then the big recording labels might take notice.

Investigate all sales options. You can sell CDs through local gift shops, bookstores or a heap of other outlets. Who knows, companies in your neighbourhood may even agree to sponsor small tours or concerts you arrange. Be inventive and try your hand at playing in streets or market places, to get your music heard.

Consider learning about the music business by getting a job with a music company for a while. The industry is dominated by a few major companies. Choose a record label you like and then contact the company asking if they will take you on, unpaid, for a few weeks' work experience. Ask them very nicely and be as polite as you know how. Make sure you enthuse about their music and show a deep knowledge of their artists. If they agree, that will be a step towards your goal.
